For some, as the initial thought of snowboarding enters the brain, they become frantic thinking of their first chance to strap in. Others enjoy the slow build up of Autumn until the time is right to load the lifts. Fall is my favorite season, and so I am of the latter category. I enjoy gradually thinking of riding more and more as the temps drop colder and colder; I’m in no rush.
One of the best parts of Fall is premiere season: the time when all the latest snowboard films are finally released. If you’re lucky enough to live in a city where you can attend a premiere party, you’ll find it is the best way to feel a part of the snowboard community and to get stoked for the season. A few weeks ago a new premiere event hit the scene in Denver. Meka, a four day Fall snowboarding event, got the city ready for winter thorough events such as a rail jam, free snowboarding, a Jamie Lynn 1910 concert, parties, and of course a plethora of premieres. If you’re like me and didn’t get the chance to attend, mark your calendars for next year as it seemed this was not an event to miss.
Detox - A Film by Joseph Bland & Logan Lauffer
After gaining attention with their first film “For Now”, released in the Fall of 2022, Jospeh Bland and Logan Lauffer are back again with their latest street video: “Detox”. In collaboration with Relyk, a streetwear clothing brand, the duo put their noses to the grindstone this past winter on their mission to show the world what they’ve got. I sat down with Joseph, the filmmaker behind this project, to hear more about the video and the effort that went into it.
Tell me about Detox and what you guys set out to accomplish with it?
The goal was to make the best thing we could with what we had available. That entailed doing as much quality work with the support we had. The goal is always to make something that we want to watch over and over again, Logan says that all the time. This year we wanted to make something that we loved while also improving on what we’ve already done.
Can you explain who Logan Lauffer is and how your relationship works when creating a film like this?
He is the hardest working dude I know, and that’s the reason I think we’ve been so loyal to each other because we feed off of that energy of each other. Our relationship is fully collaborative. If not fully collaborative, it’s more on his end and I’m just putting his vision together. He’ll have a vision of where he wants certain clips next to each other and what song he wants with certain clips. We’ll have an idea and it will be a totally different version by the time we’re done with a video. I think right now we’re on the 11th version of the cut we have. When we’re finished with a video we always feel it’s the best it can be with what we had to work with.
Last year Logan and yourself released “For Now”, you mentioned that project was a means for you guys to figure out your process filming in the streets, what were the biggest takeaways filming for “Detox”?
For Now was learning what we needed to do to make something happen and now we know what we need to do to improve on making something happen. That means being more selective in our process. We got lucky with the support from Relyk to be selective in where we wanted to go and what we wanted to do. Going into this next season we’re gonna look at this video and what we didn’t like about it or what we didn’t think we did best and that will be the next focus.
Detox premieres this Friday the 13th in conjunction with Relyk’s new showroom opening. What is Relyk and how has it been teaming up with them on this project?
Relyk is a higher end, punk inspired fashion brand. The homie, Sky, loved “For Now” and wanted to support us and what we were doing. The whole movie, Detox, is because of them. It’s been really cool because they’ve been really into what we’re doing making snowboard parts. It’s been a fun partnership so far. They’ve been overly supportive, and it’s always been about what we want to do.

Stoke of the Week
“I’m feeling excited. It feels weird being on this side of a video premiere and not just showing up to watch but being the one in the video. I just hope people like it and it gets them excited for the thing we all love to do.” - Logan Lauffer
