Ever wonder how pro riders keep their tricks in tack, season after season, while also progressing the level of new tricks at an ungodly rate? Currently to be a top contender in any snowboard event such as slopestyle, big air, or halfpipe, you need to be on snow training at least 10 months out of the year. When winter ends in North America, the snowboard world shifts to Mt. Hood, followed by New Zealand and Australia in the summer, and off to Europe before the major events of the season hit. And while we all wait patiently to ride across the US, the top snowboarders from around the world have been hard at work in preparation for the upcoming contest season.
Throughout the month of October, the world’s riders took up residency in the old ski town of Saas Fee, Switzerland. Shaped by renowned park builder Charles Beckinsale, the Stomping Grounds training sessions offered the best park jumps and halfpipe open in the world, for the month. The perfectly cut halfpipe proved helpful to riders like 18 year old Chaeun Lee from South Korea, who landed the world’s first triple cork 1620 (Instagram lilkeytaki).
Over in Austria, the Prime Park Sessions are still holding training camps. This setup at Stubai Glacier opened a week late, frustrating riders who had traveled far and wide to be there, but has since kicked off and has delivered some of the heaviest clips we’ve been seeing across social media. On this massive jump line riders have been stomping 1800’s, 1980’s, and 2160’s every which way, like Hiroto Ogiwara and his Switch Backside 1980 filmed by Joseph Bland.
With all these heaters coming out of these training sessions, only one thing is certain: you’re not going to want to miss a single event this winter. Stay tuned as we’ll be live streaming every snowboard event of the season over at Search of Snowboarding.
